シュロチクヤシの花

ロンドンの王立植物園の中にあるパームハウスという温室で，シュロチクヤシの花を観た。シュロチクとは別の植物なのだが，コガネタケヤシと同様に樹の幹に竹のような節ができる。その花は，ヤシの花とは思えないような形をしている。

シュロチクヤシ（Ptychosperma macarthurii (H.Wedland ex Veitch) H.Wedland ex Hook.f.）は，ヤシ科プチコスペルマ属に属し，ニューギニア（南部）～オーストラリア（北部）原産で，その周辺の太平洋諸島などでは広く栽培されている常緑高木ということだ。

英名を「MacArthur Palm（マッカーサーのヤシ）」と言うらしい。
